Lobster! Lobster! Lobster!
The boyfriend and I recently went to Newport, RI for a weekend to attend my coworkers wedding. While there, we rented bicycles and toured around Newport. Downtown Newport is one of the prettiest little towns that I have ever been. The ocean views were picturesque and pristine. The town is really bustling in the summer and is swarmed with tourists. Downtown looks like a scene from a movie and everyone is just very friendly. The great thing about Newport aside from the calmness and beauty of it was of course...the seafood!
While bike riding, boyfriend and I came upon The Red Parrot Cafe - which was recommended by my great friend and recently turned 'Mrs.' Robyn! After looking over the 20 page menu which listed the most incredible sounding dishes, we decided on the menu - Lobster Bisque, Clam Chowder, Lobster Pizza, and LBLT - Lobster, Bacon, Lettuce, and tomato.
Before I go into detail about the dishes themselves, I want to write about my view on seafood. Whenever I eat shellfish like lobster, clams, shrimp, etc. I prefer to eat in it's original form and with flavoring that enhances the taste. Since seafood is pretty much marinating in salt water for all it's life, I think seafood is tasty on its own. I shun dipping seafood in butter because it completely over-rides the taste and point of eating a delicious already seasoned meat. Plus, seafood is really healthy and has little calories. Dipping seafood in butter defeats this idea that it is healthy and voids the natural taste of the meat. It turns it into a buttery mess. Honestly, you may as well be eating toast with butter. Now that I have given my view on this...I will go into the food.
The lobster bisque and clam chowder were decent. I would have preferred bigger chunks of lobsters and clams which is probably why I was a TAD disappointed. The soup itself was pretty good, nicely flavored, not too salty. I thought the soup had a good hint of lobster and clams but would have loved to chew on actual chunks of lobster.
The LBLT was better. The lobster salad didn't have too much mayo so it was nice to be able to taste the lobster flavoring. The sandwich was served on a sesame bun with spinach, bacon, and tomato. On the side were fresh potato chips and a cool sour cream based chipolte dressing.
The best dish of the meal by far was the Lobster Pizza. This was ordered by the Boyfriend so I will give him credit for choosing the most delicious part of the meal. I loved this pizza because it was a white pizza with mozzarella cheese, fresh Italian spices, and drizzled with olive oil. I am pretty sure they used an entire lobster to cover up this 12 inch pie because I was in Lobster Heaven! A touch of sea salt made this one of the top ten things I have ever eaten. The chunks of Lobster were fantastic and the chewy dough was just a perfect accompaniment.
Definitely recommend the Red Parrot if you are ever in Newport and their deliciously generous portion of Lobster on Pizza. Can someone bring me back a pie if they go? :)
